Rishikesh is spread out over a number of areas, which is important when deciding where to stay. The most happening areas, Swag Ashram (the main center for spiritual seekers, where Parmarth Niketan is located) and Laxman Jhula (a lively traveler's area with lots of cafes), on the eastern bank are not readily accessible by vehicle. If carrying your luggage around is an issue, a stay on the western bank is preferable. These five relaxing Rishikesh hotels all offer something different for various budgets. Do ask for a discount during non-peak times! For other smaller guesthouses which are many, it's best to just turn up.
1. Sanskriti
Sanskriti markets itself as a Vedic retreat. If you're interested in wellness and want to combine that aspect into your vacation, this hotel could be the perfect place to stay. In terms of location, it occupies a convenient spot in the market area on the western side of the Ganges River, right near Ram Jhula (so you can easily walk over to the Swag Ashram area). What makes it special are an organic Ayurvedic cafe overlooking the river, and Ayurvedic and yoga packages ranging from cleansing to spiritual guidance. A qualified Ayurvedic doctor is on the premises. The rooms are also very attractively decorated and have balconies overlooking the market. Expact to pay 1,700 rupees for a single and 2,500 rupees for a double, per night.
2. Divine Resort
It's definitely not a resort in the true sense but the Divine Resort is an excellent budget place to stay with magnificent river views. This big white hotel is located in the Laxman Jhula area, but on the western bank so it's easily reached. It's divided into two wings, old and new. The soothing flow of the river can be heard from rooms on the lower floors, and the river can be seen from all over the hotel. The hotel also has a restaurant that serves Indian and western food. Room rates start from 2,600 rupees ($60) per night for a double in the old wing, and go up to $125 per night for a suite in the new wing, plus taxes. Do negotiate a discount.
3. Vashisht Guest House
If you want to stay in the Swag Ashram area and are looking for an economical guest house, Vashist is possibly the top pick. It's a small and intimate family operated place with only nine rooms, located just past Parmarth Niketan ashram. The rooms are really bright and clean, with rates starting from 350 rupees for a single, per night. There's even a deluxe double with an equipped kitchen for 700 rupees per night. Air conditioning is available in some rooms for 300 rupees extra a night. All rooms have hot water and attached bathroom.
4. Rainforest House
Rainforest House, run by an Englishman an his Indian wife, is an absolute haven on the northern outskirts of Rishikesh. The guesthouse is tucked away in a valley on the banks of the river, near a small beach. It's perfect for anyone who wants to get away from it all. Guests can be at one with nature, meditate, swim, or even go white water rafting. There are a couple of things to keep in mind if staying at this place though. It requires a 100 meter walk down a sometimes steep path to reach it, and alcohol isn't permitted on the premises. Double rooms start from around $50 per night, including tax. A minimum two night stay is required.
5. Raj Resort
Again, this place is hardly a resort, but rather a budget guest house. Its location may or may not appeal to visitors. It's situated in the Tapovan/High Bank area, which is a few kilometers above the Laxman Jhula area. Many backpackers are attracted to this area though, and you'll find plenty of people to meet up with in the guest house. Part of the attraction is no doubt the lovely garden setting, chilled out restaurant that serves tasty western food, clean rooms with balconies, and friendly staff. Rates range from 500 rupees for a standard double without air conditioning up to 1,250 rupees for a deluxe air conditioned double, per night.
