Wow! The only luxury hotel in the vicinity of Kolkata airport, the Swissotel opened in mid 2010. It's a striking property. Part of the new City Center II urban development in New Town, the hotel is located next to a large shopping mall and cinema complex. So, staying near the airport doesn't have to be boring. Double rooms are available for under 10,000 rupees ($200) per night, including tax.

The Shivangan hotel is also located on V.I.P Road, around 15 minutes from the airport. It's a standard budget hotel that's located above a banquet hall. Rooms are clean, room service is provided (the hotel doesn't have its own restaurant), and the staff are generally helpful. Hot water is available only at certain times though. Rates start from around 1,800 rupees plus tax for an air conditioned double. It's worth paying a bit more to get a deluxe room. Apparently, some of the least expensive rooms can be a bit ordinary. However, as far as budget airport hotels go, this one is one of the better rated ones.
Location, location! Hotel Airways is situated near Gate 2 of Kolkata airport and receives mixed reviews. Accommodations are basic, and some say clean. The better rooms have air conditioning. There's even wireless Internet and room service. The hotel has a rooftop restaurant as well. You can see flights take off and land from there. Expect to pay around 1,000 rupees per night upwards, plus tax. A bonus is free airport drop off around the clock.
The North Star hotel is another cheap airport hotel, located around 15 minutes from Kolkata airport on Dum Dum Road. Like many, it has very basic facilities and receives mixed reviews. A downside is that there is no hot water in the rooms. Staff are quite friendly and helpful though. A restaurant with a bar is on the premises. (However, do note, that single female travelers are banned from entering it and must eat in their rooms). Expect to pay around 1,000 rupees for a room.
Hotel Heritage has a convenient location not far from Kolkata Airport, on V.I.P. Road. There are a few notable shops in the vicinity, including a Big Bazaar outlet. The hotel offers 20 rooms starting from 1,600 rupees for a single and 2,000 rupees for a double, plus taxes. However, reviews indicate that it's dirty, smelly, and has poor service. Definitely book at your own risk!
Although the Hotel White Palace is listed in travel guides such as Lonely Planet, it receives many negative reviews from travelers. Claims of dirty rooms and rude staff abound. So do be aware! Ph: (91)33 2511 7402.
8. Keep an Eye Out For: Radisson Blu Airport Hotel
News is that the Radisson chain will be opening the old MBD Airport Hotel in December 2014 (unfortunately, it's been facing long delays). This hotel is one to watch out for!
