GRT Temple Bay ResortThe best hotel in Mamallapuram is the luxurious five star Radisson GRT Temple Bay Resort. The hotel is set on expansive 46 acre grounds and has its own private beach, as well as two swimming pools -- one of which is the longest in Asia. It's possible to walk along the beach from the hotel to the Shore Temple. The hotel was recently revamped and is an extremely attractive property, with a contemporary feel. The range of accommodations on offer is impressive. Double garden view rooms start from $200 per night. However, it's worth paying the extra money for a spacious sea view villa, costing around $240 per night for a double. Located only 15 feet away from the shore, these villas are delightfully private. Rates include buffet breakfast.
Ideal Beach ResortThe Ideal Beach Resort is located further to the north of town, and is an excellent hotel for families. It offers good quality mid range accommodations, with private beach and swimming pool. The hotel has been progressively developed and refurbished over the years. Generous sized rooms are clean, and staff are welcoming and attentive. The hotel's restaurant specializes in seafood, with dishes cooked upon request. Rates range from 4,500 rupees ($100) for a double cottage, up to 12,000 rupees ($260) for a sea view villa, per night. Taxes and breakfast are additional.
Golden Sun HotelThe Golden Sun Hotel & Beach Resort is also located a short distance north of Mamallapuram. It's not a bad choice if you want to stay at a beach resort but are on a budget. The hotel has private beach and swimming pool, but don't expect a stunning sea view from the sea facing rooms! Rates start at $45 for a double air conditioned cottage, and go up to $95 for a double air conditioned suite, per night. Please note that the hotel doesn't allow single male guests. It's for families and couples only.
Hotel MahabsHotel Mahabs is conveniently located in the heart of town, near the bus stand and Arjuna's Penance. The hotel has an appealing, leafy garden setting with rooms overlooking the swimming pool. There's an in-house restaurant, as well as plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. Expect to pay 1,500 rupees ($32) for a standard air conditioned room per night, plus tax.
Siva Guest HouseSiva Guest House is a charming little place with 14 rooms, located over three floors. It's perfect for budget travelers and backpackers who want comfortable, lively accommodations, without any frills. The guest house represents terrific value for money. It's situated in a quiet street, close to the sea and fresh seafood restaurants. Rooms are clean and all have private bathrooms. Some also have hot water heaters, televisions, and air conditioning. Room rates range from 200 rupees to 700 rupees ($4.50-$15) in the low season, and 400 rupees to 800 rupees ($9-$17) in the high season. The guest house is deservedly very popular, so make sure you book well ahead, even in the low season!
