Even if your budget doesn't extend as far as staying in one of the palace hotels in Jodhpur, you can still have a delightful stay in a heritage property. Here are five of the best budget hotels in Jodhpur below $50. Many are located in the characterful Old City below the Fort.

1. Devi Bhawan

Devi Bhawan is very attractively set amongst lush gardens a short rickshaw ride from downtown Jodhpur. If you're looking for a place to rejuvenate away from the hustle and bustle, this is it. The enticing feature of this hotel is that it has a swimming pool. Expect to pay 2,300 rupees ($43) for a standard room, and 2,800 rupees ($52) for a deluxe room, per night. The standard rooms have a garden setting, while the deluxe rooms have a balcony and private sitting area. The hotel has a restaurant and lounge as well.

The Haveli Inn Pal is very conveniently situated in the center of Jodhpur, close to the clock tower and market. It's also within walking distance of Mehrangarh Fort. Often described as an oasis in the middle of Jodhpur, the hotel was once a private 18th Century aristocratic home. It has an ambient rooftop restaurant with sweeping views. Guests can enjoy a traditional candlelight dinner there, with music and dance. Expect to pay 2,250 rupees ($42) for a double deluxe room, per night. Rates include breakfast.

Hem Guest House, which is actually a homestay in the Old City, receives rave reviews for its outstanding hospitality. Negotiate your way through the narrow, winding streets of Jodhpur and you'll be rewarded with a stay at the Shahi Guest House. The guest house is tucked away in a quirky 350 old Mughal-style Haveli, with rooftop garden, in the Old City. It's run by a warmhearted family, and is wonderfully original and atmospheric. There are six unique rooms, which range in price from 1,000 to 2,500 rupees ($18-46), per night. The more expensive rooms are spacious, ornately decorated, and well worth the money. The Shahi Suite has balconies and windows on three sides, affording magnificant views of Mehrangarh Fort and old town. It has a brand new bathroom as well.

5. The Blue House

As its name suggests, The Blue House is partially painted blue. It's a groovy, family-run, guest house with 12 unique rooms that have an elegant regal feel about them. The building is a renovated haveli (mansion), located in the Old City. Like most properties there, it has a rooftop terrace with restaurant, reasonably priced beer, and fabulous view of the Fort. You'll feel very cared for at this guest house too. Rooms are inexpensive, starting from around $20 per night. However, the 1,800 rupee ($35) a night suite on the top floor is gorgeous and well worth paying the extra.
