The Elephanta Festival-- an annual music and dance festival usually held at Elephanta Island off the coast of Mumbai -- has faced a few issues in recent years. Firstly, it was canceled after night ferries stopped running following the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai.
The Festival resumed last year, but at a new venue at the Gateway of India. The Maharastra Tourism Development Corporation, which organizes the Festival, claimed the move was necessary because of logistical problems. However, it didn't prove to be a popular decision.
Hence, the Festival will be returning to the caves on Elephanta Island this year. It's going to take place this weekend -- March 2 and 3, 2013-- from 6.30 p.m. until 10 p.m. both evenings. There will be a wide range of performances in genres ranging from Indian classical to Western fusion.
According to this news report, the line-up of musicians and dancers includes Prabhakar Karekar, Ranjit Barot, Shweta Pandit, Parvathy Dutta, Shujaat Khan, George Brooks, V Selvaganesh and Ganesh-Kumaresh. Other attractions are a painting competition for both professionals and amateurs, and guided heritage tours of Elephanta Island.
Ferries depart from the Gateway of India and the journey takes a bit over an hour. Tickets can be purchased from there as well.
