Celebrations in Kerala are considered to be incomplete without the participation of elephants, which are worshiped as incarnations of Lord Ganesh. They're the draw card at one of Kerala's most popular attractions -- the temple festivals.
The temple festival season gets underway in February each year, and runs until April/May when the grand Thrissur Pooram takes place.
Even small towns and villages will have a festival with at least five elephants. This Varkala temple festival photo gallery shows some highlights.
Sadly, the elephants do feel the strain of the celebrations though. Sometimes, the overwork causes them to become violent, like this elephant at a recent temple festival in Aranmula.
An extensive list of temple festival dates for 2013 can be found on the Kerala Tourism website.
