One of India's quirky festivals, the annual Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, will take place from January 31- February 3, 2013. It will be the 77th edition of this traditional rural event, and according to news reports, bullock cart and dog races are back on the program!
Much to attendees' dismay and disappointment, the usual bullock cart and dog races didn't happen at last year's Olympics due to a notification under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act. (There's been a similar issue in Tamil Nadu over the traditional sport of Jallikattu bull taming, which takes place during the Pongal festival).
However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that the bullock cart and dog races do not amount to cruelty to animals, as their owners treat the animals well.
Stakes are high in the competition, as there's said to be prize money of 35 lakh up for grabs.
