Very early this morning, thousands of sadhus ran into the water for the first of three "royal baths" at the 2013 Allahabad Maha Kumbh Mela. Today was the official start of the Mela, which got underway on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. This Kumbh Mela is particularly significant and holy (and not to mention huge!) as it takes place only once every 12 years.
Around 100 million pilgrims are expected over the forthcoming 55 days of the festival. As you'd imagine, it's quite a task to cater for them all. There have been concerns over lack of preparedness, including unclean toilets and people falling sick with stomach problems due to contaminated water. Hence, it's important to be cautious about hygiene.
According to this news report, keeping up to date with the Kumbh Mela has become easier this year though, thanks to free and paid mobile apps.
