The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa.
India isn't really a place where you'd expect to find snow skiing and luxury ski resorts, but it now has both at Gulmarg in Kashmir! The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa opened there last week, filling the gap in quality accommodations.
Located 8,825 feet above sea level in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, the hotel is set over seven acres of pine valley. It has 85 rooms, including four luxury cottages, all built in traditional Kashmiri architectural style. They've been designed to offer stunning panoramic views.
What's more, the hotel is conveniently located withing walking distance of the Gulmarg Gondola, which takes skiers and sightseers up to Kongdoori Mountain, the highest ski point in the Himalayas.
Although the hotel expects most of its guests to be skiers from Europe during the winter, it's positioning itself as an all year round destination. It plans to offer a huge range of activities including trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, white water rafting, para sailing, hang gliding, fishing, and jeep safaris. A wellness center and spa is also scheduled to open in summer of 2013.
Room rates start from 14,500 rupees per night. More information is available from the Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa website.
According to this recent news report, the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department aims to attract more tourists to the area by holding events such as skiing competitions and a Gondola Cup over the next few months.
