On Tuesday, the first groups of sadhus, led by the Juna Akhara (the oldest group of Naga/naked sadhus), arrived in procession for the world's largest religious gathering -- the Kumbh Mela. The 2013 Kumbh Mela gets underway at Allahabad from January 14, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. This meeting of the religious minds attracts Hindu holy men and pilgrims from near and far. It's a spectacle never to be forgotten.
Over the course of the next few weeks, thousands more sadhus from the various sects will join the 5,000 that have already arrived and set up their camps. This Kumbh Mela will be particularly significant and holy (and not to mention huge!) as it takes place only once every 12 years. The mela area, set up by the government, reportedly sprawls over more than 58 square kilometers!
