If you're unfamiliar with Durga Puja in Kolkata, the best and most hassle free way of experiencing it is by taking a tour.
West Bengal Tourism offers a wide range of Durga Puja sightseeing packages (scroll down the list to see them all). You're spoiled for choice really. There's everything from visits to pujas in traditional family homes, to boat trips down the river on the day the statues of Goddess Durga are immersed in the water. Of course, there are tours that stop at all the popular pandals as well, including a night tour that runs until 6 a.m. so you can really experience the atmosphere!
