What happens every Sunday night at 7 p.m. in Mysore, one of the top 5 travel destinations in Karnataka? The lights come on at the city's star attraction -- the opulent Mysore Palace.
However, turning on around 97,000 lights doesn't actually happen at the flick of a switch. As Vinay of Royal Mysore Walks explains in his last blog entry, the controls are located in three different rooms in three corners of the palace. All have to be manually switched on simultaneously! There's a trick to knowing the exact moment that it will take place.
You may also be surprised to learn that each light bulb is custom made. If you go on one of Vinay's walks, you'll be able to find out the story.
The upcoming Mysore Dussehra festival (which will be held next month) is an excellent time to explore Mysore on foot, as the city is especially illuminated for the occasion. The palace lights are on nightly!
Royal Mysore Walks was a finalist in this year's About.com India Travel Awards. Check out the Royal Mysore Walks website for information about the tours offered.
