Although the main Onam day (Thiru Onam) isn't until August 29, 2012, celebrations get underway around 10 days earlier (on Atham) in Kerala, for what is the most important festival of the year there. During the Onam festival, a huge range of activities take place across the state for over two weeks.
The making of floral arrangements, known as pookalam, is a colorful highlight. However, one of best places to experience the start of Onam is Tripunithura, near Ernakulam in greater Kochi. The town holds a grand street parade reminiscent of its royal past. This year, it will happen from 10 a.m. on August 21, 2012. Additional cultural events will continue at there until August 27.
