India Photo: Kathakali at Kerala Snake Boat Races

Snake boat races are a highlight of the monsoon season in Kerala, and are also a feature of the most celebrated occasion of the year there -- the Onam festival. As well getting to experience the race excitement, you'll also be able to see colorful Kathakali dance performances. This intricate art form is one the top cultural attractions of south India.

The famed Nehru Cup always takes place on the second Sunday of August, while the Aranmula Boat Race will be happening on September 2 this year, as part of Onam.
