When I visited Jaisalmer in 2000, camel safaris into the desert were popular, but there weren't a lot of options for actually staying out in the desert apart from bedding down under the stars.

Things have changed a lot since then, with desert camps and luxury tents popping up everywhere. Many of them are located near the Sam Sand Dunes, but there are other accommodations further afield as well.
