Did you know that it's possible to go on a caravan trip in Madhya Pradesh? Well, it's not really a caravan as such -- more like a luxury motor home. However, the principle is the same. Drive it around and stay in it at night.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) is the only state tourism board in India to offer these "caravans", and I think it's a pretty innovative idea.  The caravans were introduced in 2011, and recently they obtained a national permit -- so they can be readily taken anywhere in India.

Currently the MPTDC has three caravans, purchased at a cost of 24 lakh rupees each. They're stationed at Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur. However, there are plans to add additional caravans as demand increases.

What's the cost of hiring one?  22 rupees per kilometer, with a minimum of 250 kilometers a day. There's also a 500-1000 rupee charge if you choose to halt for the night at the parking facilities at MPTDC hotels. On board the caravans, you'll find microwave oven, fridge, bathroom, studio style bedroom, TV and DVD.

Learn more by downloading this brochure.  I was surprised to discover that there's also a private company that offers motor home tours in India.  Take a look at Motorhome Adventures.
