2012 Jaipur Literature Festival: Day Four

It was back to Mumbai for me this afternoon, but I still managed to fit in a couple more sessions at the  Jaipur Literature Festival today.

One of the sessions featured a panel of authors, including Aman Nath and William Dalrymple,  who'd all contributed short stories to a recently published book called  Journeys Through Rajasthan: From the 16th to 21st Centuries.

If you're interested in Rajasthan and want to get a better understanding of the state, this is the book to read. The wide and varied stories in it range from historic to contemporary pieces, with topics including everything from an amusing look at honeymooning couples at Mt Abu, to a tale about the endangered oral epic of Pabuji.

See photos of the festival on Facebook: 2012 Jaipur Literature Festival Photo Album.

Thanks for the interesting review of this festival. Unfortunately most of the books you recommend do not seem to be available yet – so I have made a note for future purchase.

I liked the painting/drawing on the last page ‘Door at the City Palace, Jaipur. Sharell Cook’. By you? Very beautiful. Pity I cannot enlarge it and see more detail.

Is your artwork for sale?!

Hi Mark, I wish I could paint like that! It’s actually a photo that I took of a real doorway at the City Palace. Here’s the larger picture that you can download if you want: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150544187788270&set=a.10150544182858270.397928.94103103269&type=3&theater

And another similar door:

Or you can see the whole album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150544182858270.397928.94103103269&type=3&l=2d68afe35d

The Rajasthan book is published by an Indian publisher (Rupa) so although it’s out, is available only in India at the moment. But you’re right, a couple of the other ones are yet to be released — so it’s a sneak preview! ;-)

Thanks for the links to the photos.

It is a truely stunning place that I have yet to visit.

I was convinced, in it small scale, it was a painting. I suppose it a way it is.

Yes, it’s a painting on a wall instead of a canvas! :-)
