At last, the suspense is over. Mumbai's Ganesh idols have now all been unveiled on this very wet 2011 Ganesh Chaturthi. Here's an overview of the themes of some of the most popular mandals in the city.

  • Ganesh Galli has made a model of the Mallikarjun Jyotirling and adorned its idol of Lord Ganesh with a 5 kilogram golden necklace.
  • Across the road, there's a 22 foot high Ganpatti idol at Tejukaya colony. Its themes always reflect issues relevant to the middle class. This year's is farmer suicides.
  • 12th Lane Khetwadi has embedded thousands of artificial diyas (lamps) in the walls of its pandal, which represents a south Indian temple. Sounds divine! This mandal is always one of the most spectacular in Mumbai.
  • The Andhericha Raja is housed in an Akshardham temple replica.
  • The Fort GPO mandal has recreated the Kedarnath Jyotirling at the entrance, with the remaining 11 jyotirlings inside.
