The Chhatraphathi Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum) in Mumbai keeps getting better. Last year it added some new facilities to make its galleries more user friendly. Now, it has a new art gallery.
The new art gallery, called the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation Gallery, is a very exciting development for art lovers. Located in the Museum's east wing annex, the gallery houses Jehangir Nicholson's formidable art collection of close to 800 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints from 1930 to 2001. This is the first time that the collection is accessible to the public, and realizes his dream for a public art museum. The gallery opens today with a show titled Six Decades: Celebrating Bombay Artists. With iconic works by most of Mumbai's major artists on display, the show will no doubt have wide appeal.
Plans for the new gallery include holding a new exhibition three times a year, as well as regular talks, seminars, and film screenings.
