If you love history and architecture, and want to get a feel for how Bombay was back in the day, don't miss walking though the village of Khotachiwadi. Situated in Girgaum, in south Mumbai, its narrow winding lanes are home to 150 year old Portuguese-style bungalows and a tiny church.
A friend of mine recently visited Khotachiwadi and found it fascinating. Sadly, the village is gradually giving way to development though. Only 27 of the original 65 bungalows are left. Number 35, with its distinctive balconies and sloping roof, is the latest bungalow to be under threat. A developer wants to build an 18 floor residential apartment tower there.
How to get to Khotachiwadi? It's located a few streets behind Girgaum/Marine Drive Chowpatty. The closest railway station is Charni Road on the Western Line.
This website, maintained by one of the residents, is also an excellent source of information about the history and individual houses.
