Only six months after Cyclone Laila lashed the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coastline, another cyclone is on its way. Cyclone Jal unexpectedly formed from a stationary depression and intensified into a severe cyclone this morning.
The cyclone is expected to hit north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south coastal Andhra Pradesh late on Sunday (tomorrow). With a predicted windspeed of around 140 kilometers per hour, it has the potential to uproot trees and destroy thatched roofs and huts. If this happens, power and communication lines will also be damaged.
The decision to evacuate people will be taken tomorrow morning. In the meantime, fisherman have been advised not to go out to sea. Let's hope and pray that the situation improves, and the cyclone disperses. Sadly, disaster has already struck for some farmers in Andhra Pradesh though, with bumper crops being washed away by floods.
