The Indian Army has intensified its rescue efforts in Leh Ladakh, after the devastating flash flood that occurred there late last week. Many tourists stranded in remote locations around Leh have been relocated to safer areas. Airlines have also been operating additional flights to evacuate tourists from Leh as soon as possible.
However, all roads to and from Leh are still impassable. The crucial Manali-Leh highway has partially re-opened but only half way, up until Sarchu. The Sarchu to Leh stretch is still closed. Authorities hope to have the highway fully restored within the next couple of days.
So far, 23 foreigners are amongst those who lost their lives in the flood. They are three French, one Italian, one Spanish, two Tibetan, and 16 Nepalese citizens. Hundreds of people continue to remain missing or injured.
The Ministry of External Affairs has now set up a special control room that people can call for information about foreigners involved in the tragedy. The numbers are +91 11 23012113 and +91 11 23015300. There is also an email facility: controlroom@mea.gov.in
