Where to Buy Indian Handicrafts in Mumbai

Sadly, Mumbai now has one less handicrafts store. The popular Central Cottage Industries Emporium recently lost a 22 year long battle against eviction from its premises in Narang House (behind the Regal Cinema in Colaba). The owners want to build a 100 bedroom boutique hotel there instead.

The Emporium will definitely be missed. This massive showroom was crammed full of every kind of Indian handicraft imaginable, and offered good quality at a fixed price.

So, where to shop for handicrafts in Mumbai now? Unlike Delhi, with its multitude of markets, the options are a bit limited. The Colaba Causeway market has quite a few cheap items, such as wood carvings, paintings, and jewelry. Also, check out Avante (located opposite the Regal Cinema) for reasonably priced handicrafts.

Alternatively, there are a number of handicraft emporiums in the shopping arcade of the Mumbai World Trade Center, in Colaba's Cuffe Parade. Items are expensive but if you don't mind the excessive price, there are some beautiful pieces!

Does anyone else have any good suggestions?

Sadly our rapid urbanization is slowly and sadly leading to the death of professions such as handicrafts and hand made items. Check out Amber in Colaba Causeway which is a good place to look for handlooms and handicrafts.

Recently several companies have stepped into the ecommerce handicraft sphere such as India Mart and Craftsvilla – http://www.craftsvilla.com. The latter has been started with an aim to support the social cause for the upliftment of artisans, craftsmen and craftswomen.

Found a very nice place in Connaught Place, Delhi. A family run store: “Indian Arts Palace” – over 125 year old business. They keep a very good selection of only good quality crafts – or Fine Crafts as they call it – they have some unique pieces which are not mass produced and you wont see anywhere else. Very Fine collection.

They also sell more regular but good quality crafts through their website: http://www.indianartspalace.in. Even if you dont buy online, a good place to get an idea about what prices should be, to help you bargain in other places – they have reasonable pricing as I discovered.
