Dharavi in Mumbai may be the largest slum in Asia, but it's far from a depressing place. It's blessed with a strong community spirit and is thriving with small scale industry.
One of the biggest tasks performed there is the recycling of trash. 40% of Mumbai's waste, which is gathered by ragpickers (those who rummage through trash from the city's wastelands), gets recycled at Dharavi. The efforts of these ragpickers is actually being recognized by a day long fair, called the Dharavi Festival, to be held at Mahim Nature Park on March 29, 2009.
It's possible to go on a tour of Dharavi slum and marvel at it yourself. The tour is designed to be an uplifting experience, aimed at getting rid of people's preconceptions about the slum. Even better, 80% of the profits are devoted to helping underprivileged people members of society.
