One of the best and most popular ways to get to the beautiful beaches of Goa from Mumbai is to travel by train overnight. Currently, most trains make the journey in around 11 hours. However, from February 13, 2009 Indian Railways will be running a special "superfast" weekend train service that will reach Madgaon (one of the main stations in Goa) in just over 8 hours.
The train, called the 0105 Madgaon Sup Spl, is perfect for those wanting a weekend escape to Goa. It departs from Mumbai CST on Friday night at 10.15 p.m. and arrives in Goa at 7.05 a.m. on Saturday morning. Coming back, the train leaves Goa on Sunday night at 7.10 p.m. and gets into Mumbai at 4.05 a.m. on Monday morning.
There are three classes of travel available -- AC 2 tier, AC 3 tier, and sleeper class. The price of a one way ticket ranges from 313 rupees ($6.50) in sleeper class up to 1,122 rupees ($23) in AC 2 tier. You can make a reservation on the Indian Railways website.
Indian Railways intend to run the train on a trial basis until March 21, and extend it if there's demand. I don't think that will be an issue though. A quick check on the website shows that the train is already booked up for the next couple of weekends.
