The erotic temples of Khajuraho are one of India's top historical destinations. However, up until now, they've been quite difficult to reach. The main alternative to taking an expensive flight has been an arduous and very bumpy five to six hour drive from Jhansi.

The thought of that unappealing prospect has even deterred me from traveling there, so it's great news that the railway line between Jhansi and Khajuraho has finally been completed. The first train was flagged off on Friday. Called the Khajuraho-Jhansi Link Express, it covers the distance in only four and a half hours, which is much more convenient and comfortable than by road.

To get to Khajuraho, train 229A leaves Jhansi daily at 7.25 a.m. and arrives at 12.10 p.m. Coming back, train 230A departs from Khajuraho daily at 12.30 p.m. and reaches Jhansi at 5 p.m. It also stops in Orchha.

Note that the train is an unreserved local passenger train, and may not be found on the Indian Railways website. It can however be found here.

In the not too distant future, it will be possible to take a train directly to Khajuraho from Delhi via Agra and the Taj Mahal as well.

I wonder why it’s not showing up. This Indian Railways search says it does exist and is running.

Actually, I’ve discovered that the reason why it may not be found on the Indian Railways website is because it’s an unreserved train…. a local passenger train. Hope this helps!
