Goa hasn't been the only popular tourist destination in India to be affected by the global financial crisis. The number of people visiting Kerala has also dropped dramatically from last year, since the tourist season kicked off with the traditional snake boat races in August. This has resulted in many of Kerala's 450 houseboats remaining vacant.
The good news in all of this is if you're planning a trip on a Kerala houseboat, you'll be able to get some very attractive discounts. The best way of doing this is to head down to the jetty at Alleppey, where the boats are kept, and negotiate the best price directly with the owners. If you book in advance, you're sure to pay more.
