The century old toy train that winds its way up through lush greenery to the top of the mountains at Matheran, Mumbai's closest hill settlement, is likely to be included on UNESCO's list of world heritage trains late next year. The Indian government is currently preparing detailed documentation to support its application to UNESCO. If the application is accepted, the toy train will become the fourth world heritage train in India -- the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and Kalka Shimla Railway have already been awarded heritage status.
Matheran makes a great escape from Mumbai, and is one of the top picnic spots in the area. It's a very serene place to be as all vehicles are banned there, and it's possible to spend days enjoying the walking trails and breathtaking views.
