Interested in exploring India by train, but want to do it in style and comfort? There are a number of opulent luxury tourist trains in India that travel through the states of Rajasthan, Maharastra, and Karnataka.

Come October, Rajasthan is set to have a third luxury train -- The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. It's intended that this train will replicate the success of the Palace on Wheels, which is rated as one of the 10 best luxurious train journeys in the world, and is fully booked until 2010.

The government is aiming high, as The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is to be even more luxurious than the Palace on Wheels, at a cost of over $9 million to build. It will have the same itinerary as the Palace on Wheels, departing from Delhi and visiting Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bharatpur, and Agra.

Dear Sir,

What about Uttarpradesh, the holy land where both Sri Ram and Sri Krishna born? I think there are many more spiritual /cultural places in Uttar Pradesh as well.Folk dances are not prabagated, for any financial back. Why no such trains covering interesting places of Uttar pradesh and Madhya Pradesh??

Hi there, thanks for your comment. I agree that UP and MP have some very interesting places but it’s the states of Rajasthan, Maharastra, and Karnataka that have attractions which most widely appeal to tourists. Thus, these stats are particularly popular with visitors. The luxury tourist trains are a join initiative between Indian Railways and the Tourism Development Corporation in each state — so it would be up to these organizations in UP and MP to run their own trains, as far as I’m aware.
