Preparations are already underway in Kerala for the Nehru Trophy snake boat race, which is held in Alleppey on the second Saturday of August each year. This year the race will be held on August 9, 2008. The best boatmen from each village are vigorously practicing under strict supervision, and boats are being repaired and polished.

Snake boat races are huge events in Kerala and draw thousands of spectators. If you're planning on visiting Kerala over the coming couple of months, do try to catch one of these fascinating races. They're held in and around Alleppey from July to September each year, and are a particularly big part of the Onam festival.
